Double-framed
Of a roof: with longitudinal members such as purlins above the springing of the rafters. Compare single-framed.
Double chamfer
A chamfer (surface formed by cutting off a square edge) applied to each of two recessed arches.
Double pile
A row of rooms two deep.
Dragon beam
In a timber-framed building, a beam set diagonally at the corner to carry the joists where two jetties or projecting storeys meet.
Dressings
The stone or brickwork worked to a finished face about an angle, opening, or other feature.
Dripstone
Moulded stone projecting from a wall to protect the lower parts from water; when over an opening, called a hoodmould.
Drum
Circular or polygonal stage supporting a dome or cupola. Also one of the stones forming the shaft of a column.
Dry-stone
Stone construction without mortar.
Dun
(Scots): Small stone-walled fort.
Dutch gable
A gable with curved sides crowned by a pediment. Also called a Flemish gable.
