The Jetty

jettyGlossary Term [1] was a commonly used device by which the timbers of an upper floor project beyond the line of the floor below. The principle could be extended for three- or even four-storey buildings, with each storey stepping forward from the one below. Jetties could be given only to the front of buildings, or to more than one side.

Jetties also provided scope for conspicuous ornament.
